Exploring the Magic of Puppetry: A Look Back and Ahead
Celebrating the Timeless Craft of Puppetry: From Ray Harryhausen to Jim Henson
Back in 2006, I had the privilege of attending a truly remarkable exhibition in Los Angeles that celebrated the art of puppetry and character creation. It was a mesmerising display of craftsmanship, spotlighting the work of legendary creators such as Ray Harryhausen, Jim Henson, Rick Baker, and many more.
This exhibition was a treasure trove of iconic characters and fantastical creations that have captivated audiences for decades. Among the highlights were:
🐵 Gizmo from Gremlins
👽 Creatures from Aliens
🧝♂️ Yoda from Star Wars
🧙 A Numerologist from The Dark Crystal
The exhibition didn’t just showcase puppets – it offered an in-depth look at the artistry and innovation behind them. Visitors could explore detailed character sketches, original storyboards, and even costumes from beloved films. The works of Harryhausen, Henson, Baker, and their contemporaries were presented in a way that highlighted their profound influence on the worlds of film, television, and storytelling.
Looking Ahead: The Jim Henson Exhibition
For those who want to delve deeper into Jim Henson’s incredible legacy, The Jim Henson Exhibition is now a permanent installation at the Museum of the Moving Image in New York. This comprehensive exhibit features over 300 artefacts, including puppets, scripts, costumes, and rare memorabilia from his extensive career.
Henson’s visionary work, from Sesame Street and The Muppet Show to Fraggle Rock and The Dark Crystal, remains a testament to his boundless creativity and enduring impact on popular culture.
If you’re a fan of puppetry and storytelling, this exhibition is a must-see. For more information, visit Museum of the Moving Image.
